Jonathan + Mimi | San Diego Engagement

This engagement shoot was the first time that I had a couple bring an entourage with them. Jon’s twin brother and their photographer friend joined Mallory Olenius and I on our downtown San Diego adventure. Of course we put these guys to work and we couldn’t have come up with some of these pictures without them. San Diego has so many great locations for engagement pictures that it can be difficult deciding where to go. We hit Balboa Park, Sunset Cliffs and Lindbergh Field. Jonathan and Mimi have amazing fashion sense and I can’t wait to see what they come up with for their Malibu wedding. Photography by Brett Butterstein and Mallory Olenius.

Junebug Weddings Photographer Spotlight Interview

Today is my lucky day. My favorite wedding blog Junebug Weddings has featured me with a very tasteful interview and presentation of my work. When it comes to wedding photography, Junebug is in a class of their own and being a part of what they do just always feels like a good fit. When I found out that Shannon was a circus acrobat I knew that I wanted to photograph her wedding. It was at Clint Eastwood’s Mission Ranch and planned by Rsvp Event Design and Coordination. San Diego photographer Ed Atrero helped me with the photography. A touching and unique detail to this event was all of the children’s books that were displayed on each table and later donated. Here’s a quote from one of my favorite children’s authors that was also on display: “I will not play tug o’ war. I’d rather play hug o’ war. Where everyone hugs instead of tugs, where everyone giggles and rolls on the rug, where everyone kisses, and everyone grins, and everyone cuddles, and everyone wins.” -Shel Silverstein.

Cynthia’s mother is from Colombia and Eric’s is from China, so it’s remarkable in a way that these two people are now engaged to be married. This was our second and successful attempt at getting together for their portraits. The first time we were rained out. The second time we got very lucky with a perfect day in between May snow showers.

San Miguel has become a favorite place of mine, so finally getting to shoot a wedding here was really exciting. Meredith and Daniel’s Shaman wedding ceremony was not only incredibly unique and spiritual, but very emotional and extremely photogenic. The ceremony and reception took place at Casa Schuck. The event was planned by Meengan and Guadalupe at Penzi Weddings and Events. They are incredible at what they do but also spoiled me during my entire stay. One of the most magical moments of the day was when the wedding party paraded through the cobble stone streets drinking a total of eight bottles of tequila.
